ANNUAL EVENTS:
Southwest Freedom Riders, Inc. has 5 main annual riding events, but additional events are often added on every year. Each one is open to all types of vehicles, 2 or 4 wheels. They all run approximately 75 miles long, traveling along secondary roads in Vermont or New York. Everyone gets a chance to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Northeast while supporting a good cause. All of our runs end with a fun gathering with food, prizes, and fun and games for the whole family.
- Annual Spring Swap Meet- [May 11, 2008] Held every year in the Spring, this event has been continuingly successful over the past few years. It grows more with each passing year. When you pair hundreds of vendors with everything from leather and parts to jewelry and food with thousands of people through the gate, mix in a little sunshine and you've got yourself one great day. Events include a bike show and a tattoo contest, trophies awarded. Come check our new and improved location this year!!!
- Blind Run- [June 1, 2008] Held each year in the spring, the Blind Run is just for fun. You must follow the colored pie plates to arrive at an unknown destination. A yellow plate means that there's a decision to be made. A green plate means keep going; you made the right choice. A red plate means you messed up; turn around. Points are awarded for mileage and time. Low score wins.
- Ron Williams Memorial Run- [July 13, 2008] The Ron Run is held each year on the second weekend in July in memory of Ron Williams, a Rutland Lawyer who died of injuries resulting from a motorcycle accident. Proceeds of this event are split between Ron's favorite charities: Special Olympics and the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences. This poker run ends each year with a cookout attended by Special Olympic athletes from the surrounding area.
- Silver Towers Ride- [July 20, 2008] This benefit run is a fundraiser for Silvers Towers Camp for Exceptional People. This ride was introduced just last year. It was a huge success!! Like the Ron Run, it ended with a picnic at the camp...with the campers of course. A great ride and a rewarding experience.
- Peaches N' Cream Ladies Lead Poker Run- [August 3, 2008]This run is held each year in August to raise money for, and awareness of breast cancer. Led by the ladies, the run ends with a barbeque (cooked and served by the men), entertainment and bike games. This run has established a connection with the Ladies-FIRST program in Vermont, becoming their single largest single donator with $4,000 donated from the run in 2002!
- Remember Rally- [September 7, 2008] This run is held each year on or around September 11 to honor the heroes of the 9/11 tragedy. The ride is part of a nation-wide benefit for the rescue workers who are now sick from doing the clean-up at Ground Zero. The chemicals and toxins that they were exposed to have created both short and longterm health problems. What the rescue workers and volunteers saw and did at Ground Zero is catastrophic and will demand healthcare funding for many years. The money raised goes to the Mount Sinai Hospital for their "Health for Heroes" program.
- Border Run- [September 21, 2008] This poker run travels along the Vermont-New York border and is a fundraiser for the organization. Held each year in late September, the run ends with food and bike games for the whole family. The funds raised are filtered out to the different charities throughout the year's events.
